A pre-Christmas city break is a great way to get into the Christmas spirit and get some architectural inspiration – Budapest excelled on both counts!
Visiting the Széchenyi thermal baths was a highlight of the trip, I was surprised how enjoyable it was being in an outside pool in December.
By taking a boat trip along the Danube you could really appreciate the variety of buildings and I was surprised to see some incredibly contemporary structures such as the Bálna (Whale) on the Pest bank, this is a modern shopping, cultural and entertainment centre set amongst the historic buildings.

If biophilia is your thing you will love the plant filled TWENTY SIX (www.twentysixbudapest.com) it’s a cosy urban jungle in an enclosed triple height courtyard kept to a comfortable 26 degrees.
For a more elaborate setting with ornate detailing a visit to ‘The most beautiful café in the world’ – The New York café. The stunning plasterwork, chandeliers and painted ceiling have to be seen to be believed.
So much to see and do in this Hungarian city.
